Here you will find how I apply all elements of PERMA to my life here at Georgetown

Engagement

This year, I decided to continue my sport of tennis here at Georgetown. I made sure to know when Club Tennis try-outs were and attended them for three days. I wasn’t sure if I was going make the club team but I was determined to try my best and ultimately, have fun. I got the notification that I had be chosen to be a member and was scheduled to play in the next tournament at the University of Pennsylvania. I was able to watch incredible teams from Yale, UPENN, and UVA play against each other for the top spots at the tournament. Having not traveled out of Texas before coming to college, I enjoyed leaving Georgetown for a weekend and taking a mini road trip.

This semester, I was able to do some site seeing since I live in city that is known to attract lots of tourists. I took a trip to the National Gallery of Art and found myself mesmerized by Mark Rothko’s collection: The Classic Paintings. All of his artworks are found in one room at the 1st Tower on the East Building. The environment was refreshing, while at the same time thought-provoking. Although it may seem like his paintings are just colorful rectangles, Rothko intended for his pieces to evoke emotion from the viewer. His goal was to solely use color because this aspect of art is usually pushed back by other aspects such as form, lines, and ideas.

….

Unfortunately, I was only able to upload one painting on my domain, which serves as an injustice to Rothko’s purpose. As previously stated, Rothko looked to express emotions through his work; he wanted to evoke a spiritual experience in each of his viewers. In order to further accomplish this, he created pieces that fit in a designated collection. He requested that these collections be displayed in exclusive rooms. He would control the lighting and seating in his exhibitions. All these efforts were done in order to help transfer the viewer into the states Rothko wanted them to feel.

Being able to appreciate art as an individual without any outside bias was an experience I chose to embark on spontaneously one weekend. It was a choice that I hope to make again when I return next Fall.

Relationships

Here at Georgetown I was able to meet so many people who are very different from me but at the same time, are exactly like me. Although, I’ve only known them for a couple of months, our friendships were able to last through the “busy” schedules. I think this can be credited to our efforts of trying to stay in contact with each other even if it’s just catching up. We try to plan casual hang outs with each other that include snacks or games so that we can have fun and also keep ourselves eating. I feel that having this friend base here at Georgetown has also helped me relax when I’m caught up in all my classes and activities. It is easy to motivate and help each other whenever one of us is down.

Even though I am so far away from home, I have also managed to keep in touch with some old friends from high school. Now don’t get me wrong, there were some friendships that were not meant to continue but the few that did are the ones I hold closest to my heart. We text each other every now and then asking how things are going, whether they are enjoying their new home, or if they need an extra friend to talk to. During the Christmas break, we scheduled a dinner night with all of us. We discussed the disasters of the semester and the unexpected outcomes of college.

….

I believe that these relationships are the most essential to maintain. Why? I grew up with the majority of them. They were there as a support system when I was deciding who I wanted to become and where I wanted to go. They are my roots and will always remind me of where I came from. We also have chosen different paths in our lives, and I am excited to see where we all end up!

Meaning

As a business student, I have been looking for different opportunities to use my skills of creativity and numbers. This year I was able to take part in a marketing campaign for the shoe brand called Laiík. They were in need of promotional photos for their off season period. Since the current months were centered around Spring and Mother’s Day, my team and I decided to create a “Mother, Daughter” campaign that would appeal to their target audience and recognize the need for a gift for the special occasion. After setting a place for the pictures to be taken, I was chosen to be a model for the sandals since I fit the smaller figure of a daughter. Getting to pick out an outfit and the shoot itself was lots of fun. However, I loved the process of editing the pictures afterwards and pitching the campaign strategy to the board of the company. Through activities like this, I love seeing my passion illuminate.

Accomplishments

Since I am a first-year student in the McDonough School of Business, it was mandatory to enroll in a first-year business seminar. This course participates in a case competition against all the other first-year business students. At first, this project seemed to be another assignment that needed to be done in order to complete the class. However, I soon learned that this event was going to restore my confidence as a competitive student here in college while at the same time make new friends. We were a cohesive team that had converted multiple opinions into single ideas. We met multiple times to ensure our project was ready for its presentation. We encouraged one another to do our best and improve upon our past performance. As a result, four strangers managed to learn from each other and work as a team while also taking second place in the finals.

One goal I set for myself this semester was to visit the cherry blossoms when they bloomed this Spring. I understood that this event was going to take place during a time that midterms were happening and clubs were planning. However, it was going to be a sight that I had never experienced before and a time that I would spend with friends.

….

As the week approached, I made sure to complete all of my weekly assignments before hand and get ahead for the upcoming week. Now, that I look back on this decision, it was very beneficial since I eliminated any factors that had the potential to stress me out and distract me from enjoying myself.
This was definitely an accomplishment in my book since last semester I put my studies in front of lots of social gatherings and events. I don’t necessarily regret it since I reached the goal I set for myself academically, but it was at the cost of venturing out into the city that I chose to spend the next four years of my life at.
